Welcome to the Frogs and Squirrels (Y1) class page.
The class teachers are Miss Christie (Frogs) and Miss Rymmer (Squirrels). The Year 1 teaching assistant is Mrs Hall.
Year 1 is all about expanding our horizons and developing our independence. Alongside our packed and exciting curriculum, the children are given lots of time to complete ‘busy jobs’ where they choose their own line of enquiry and follow their own learning paths. They enjoy experimenting with the resources in the classroom and outside – finding new ways of using them to play, explore, talk about and engage with their learning. We use a combination of whole class teaching, small group activities and independent learning tasks to consolidate previous learning and complete new challenges. Make sure you ask your child about the activities they have been busy completing. They will be sure to impress you with their knowledge, their creativity and their energy.
Mental maths and fluency in recalling number facts is vital.

Please find below a range of handwriting videos to support your child’s letter formation. Please encourage your child to follow these videos to ensure each letter starts and ends in the correct place.
Feel free to print and use the activity sheets alongside the letter formation or simply provide your child with lined paper to write on.

Children in Year 1 can use this website to play lots of different games. These will help them to become really confident with their phonics.

Select the Phase you want at the top and then you can choose games to help you practise blending and segmenting or to help you learn your tricky words.
Remember that your child will learn to read by progressing through the phases…
At the start of Year 1 the children will already be able to read words containing the Phase 2 GPCs and be able to access many of the Phase 3 and 4 activities.
During the Autumn term we recap our Phase 3 and Phase 4 learning and begin to learn Phase 5.
During the Spring and Summer terms we cover the whole of Phase 5 and consolidate our understanding of the new graphemes for reading and the alternative pronunciations.

Learning to read with Little Wandle
We teach children to read using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme which helps children to meet and gain confidence in the GPCs (grapheme-phoneme correspondences) they need to tackle books with confidence and develop a love of reading for life.
At school the children take part in:
- daily phonics sessions
- three group reading sessions a week
- whole class reading sessions
- story sharing
- a whole host of reading activities as part of their curriculum learning
In order to support your children learning to read you will have two books each week. The first book is a fully decodable book which has been carefully matched to your child’s reading ability. Support them as they read this several times and build their fluency and confidence in talking about what they have read.
The second book is a picture book which your child will not be able to read independently. This is a ‘sharing book’ to be read together. This books is to help you share the joy that reading brings with your child.
For more information and guidance about how we teach phonics and how you can help your child read each of these books, please use the link below to visit the Little Wandle website:
