Welcome to our Autumn Term in Year 5! We’ve got lots to look forward to!
In the Autumn Term 1, we will consider the question, ‘What is it like to live in the USA?’. We focus on where the USA is located in the world, looking at climates across the USA, as well as physical and human landmarks. We continue the topic by focusing in on the state and city of New York. This topic culminates in an opportunity for the children to explore their own research question based around the USA. They will have regular opportunities, throughout this topic, to develop their use of atlases and digital mapping skills.
As if that wasn’t enough, in Autumn Term 2, our topic focus will be based on the Victorians. The children will enjoy their ‘hook’ day straight after their half term holidays, with immersion activities into life in Victorian schools. They will then learn about Queen Victoria, the Industrial revolution, workhouses, compare and contrast rich and poor Victorians and finish with the introduction of Christmas. We can’t wait!

We’ll kick off the term with the topic, ‘Space: What is really out there?’ The children will cover a range of scientific-based enquiry questions as they explore the great mysteries of our universe! After the half-term, we’ll look at a new topic called ‘Crime and Punishment: did the punishment always fit the crime?’ The children will cover the history of ‘Crime and Punishment’, which culminates in a visit to the Galleries of Justice.

Spring Term Overview
Welcome to the summer term in Year 5!
This term, we’re looking forward to studying two new topics. In Summer 1, we’ll take a closer look at the Ancient Greeks. We’ll find out all about what life was like for the people who lived in Ancient Greece, particularly in the city states of Athens and Sparta. Furthermore, we’ll investigate how the Greeks defeated the Persians and Alexander the Great’s role in helping this come about.
As if that wasn’t enough, in Summer 2, we’ll begin our next topic: ‘What are the biomes of the world?’ The children will have the opportunity to explore a range of different biomes and perhaps even have a go at creating their very own biome! We can’t wait to get started!
