The Government has recently announced changes to who can receive Free School Meals (FSM). These changes are designed to make FSM available to more children from September 2026.
What is changing?
Previously, children could qualify for Free School Meals if their family received certain benefits and met an income threshold. Under the new arrangements, more families receiving Universal Credit will become eligible.
Why does this matter?
When a child is registered for Free School Meals, the school may also receive additional funding called the Pupil Premium Grant. This funding helps schools provide extra support, resources, and opportunities to improve outcomes for eligible pupils.
What should parents do?
Even if your child already receives a school meal, or you think your family may not qualify, we encourage you to check your eligibility and register if you can.

- May help your child access additional support and opportunities.
- Brings extra funding into the school to benefit pupils.
If my child receives Universal Infant Free School Meals, do I still need to apply?
Yes. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive Universal Infant Free School Meals regardless of family income. However, if your family is eligible under the Free School Meals criteria, registering your child will allow the school to receive Pupil Premium funding that can be used to support learning and wellbeing.
