Reading and Phonics

Learning to read with Little Wandle

We teach children to read using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme which helps children to meet and gain confidence in the GPCs (grapheme-phoneme correspondences) they need to tackle books with confidence and develop a love of reading for life.

At school the children take part in:

  • daily phonics sessions
  • three group reading sessions a week
  • whole class reading sessions
  • story sharing
  • a whole host of reading activities as part of their curriculum learning

In order to support your children learning to read you will have two books each week. The first book is a fully decodable book which has been carefully matched to your child's reading ability. Support them as they read this several times and build their fluency and confidence in talking about what they have read.

The second book is a picture book which your child will not be able to read independently. This is a 'sharing book' to be read together. This books is to help you share the joy that reading brings with your child.
