Home Learning Maths / English Week 9 Summer term

Week 9 of Home Learning Week beginning 22.06.20

This week in maths we are revisiting calculation strategies  as it has been a while now since these have been covered. Calculation strategies are very important and knowing the basics can then help with many other areas of maths.

+ (addition) answer is bigger unless you add 0

- (subtraction) answer is smaller unless you take away 0

x (times) answer is bigger unless you times by 0 or 1

÷ (divide) answer is usually smaller

For multiplication you can use arrays to help you. Look at the video below which is a reminder of how to use arrays.

For this task start at the beginning of the activities and see how far you can get. Can you work out what number has been put into the robot to give the different answers?

For division choose a couple of challenges to have a go at and you could use some real objects to help you smiley

English 22.06.20

Welcome to this week's English work. We are going to be using a storybook about Robin Hood to practice our comprehension skills.

From Tuesday I will add a daily Microsoft Teams lesson which I have recorded and put on youTube, which will concentrate on the reading skills of retrieval, inference and vocabulary. On Friday there will be a Robin Hood competition so have a look out for that! We will start the week with our usual spelling lesson but then hopefully you can read the first two chapters of the Robin Hood book before tomorrow's lesson and learn a bit more about him during the topic work you do on Monday.

Now read the first 2 chapters of the book you are going to be reading this week- The Adventures of Robin Hood- Before you start, read the blurb on the back and see if you can predict what is going to happen!

Tuesday

I have had a go at producing a reading skills lesson about information retrieval- I hope you can all access it ok. If you have any problems please contact me via email. If you cannot access it or you prefer not to use it, then you can print out the question and answer sheet which goes with the video and just use the powerpoint about the book to answer the questions. If you can access the lesson you don't necessarily need to print out the sheet -the answers can be done on paper.

Wednesday

Today we are going to learn about the reading skill of inference and answer some questions using this skill. We will be reading the next 2 chapters of the story. You will be able to join me in the lesson or if you prefer you can use the powerpoint yourselves. I have added the questions that go with the lesson. You can print them out to use in it or simply write the answers on plain paper.

I will upload this lesson first thing on Wednesday morning. I look forward to having you join me!

Powerpoint to use if you cannot access the video or want to go through it yourself.

Hi, I have uploaded the video below for today's lesson- I have noticed that at the beginning of the lesson where I tried to share the short film, explaining the meaning of inference it doesn't actually show on the video. During the video, when I say we are going to watch a short film about inference please pause it and click on the youTube film I have added to watch it. Then go back and carry on with my lesson. Thank you! (It's all trial and error!)- Mrs C surprise
